While many people have fond memories of their best food experiences, I have a vivid recollection of one of my worst. When my younger sister and I were about seven and ten years old, respectively, my mother herniated a disk in her spine and was bed-ridden for a solid month. My mother, being the main “food maker” in our family, always made it a point to concoct delicious dinners for us on a regular basis. However, with her being incapacitated, my sister and I were forced to survive on my father’s “cooking” (dare I even call it that?) His idea of a meal consisted of anything frozen that he could put on a baking tray – tater tots, chicken fingers, fish sticks (or, basically, anything you could put the word “tot” behind). By the time a month was up I felt as though I would die if I put any more frozen, processed, particle-board food in my mouth. I believe this
experience helped me realize the value of healthy, home-made, fresh food even more.
