“Really, Jenna, you have to finish your breakfast,” my babysitter Christy would sternly say. I could hear the frustration in her voice, and I completely understood her annoyance. I had been sitting at the table nibbling for three hours.

I stared down at my half-eaten muffin, crusty pancake, stale toast, soggy cereal or other various breakfast foods. By now it had grown cold, uninteresting, and unappetizing. For that matter, it was probably unsanitary to eat anything that had been sitting out in excess of three hours.

This was the morning routine, nonetheless. My sisters and I would sit down together, yet I would sit at the table for hours after everyone finished. Eventually, I grew out of this habit and avoided public humiliation by learning to eat faster.

Breakfast still isn’t my favorite meal, and I’m sure you’ll still find me sitting last at the table.
